The art of George James Rowe has been out of sight for so long that the few known works in Suffolk museums and archives have led art historians to assess him only as a minor artist of the ‘Suffolk School’. With the re-emergence of over five hundred works by George James Rowe at a Christies sale in 2008, forthe first time it has been possible to re-appraise his achievements and place him rightfully alongside the pantheon of Suffolk artists who followed in the footsteps of Gainsborough and Constable, especially his Woodbridge friend and artistic soul mate Thomas Churchyard (1798-1865). Rowe was befriended by Edward FitzGerald (1809-1883) who collected his work and mentioned him in his letters. Following in-depth research, this new account of Rowe’s life and career unravels the mystery of how his work was lost and re-discovered, fascinating anyone who loves the Suffolk landscape and the art it has inspired. The book is the result of a long trail of detective work running from Woodbridge and Ipswich in Suffolk, to Seaford in Sussex, to Wimborne Minster in Dorset and from London to Jacksonville, Illinois.
