Team Jarrold at Run Norwich: Gareth’s Story
Over the next few weeks we will be bringing you stories from our colleagues taking part in the Run Norwich 10K this summer. Whether you have got a place at this year’s Run Norwich 10K or you are wanting to improve your fitness this year hopefully these stories will give you a little inspiration.
Jarrold Sports are delighted to once again be the Official Retail Partner for Run Norwich, so much so that this year we are entering a Jarrold team. Over the next few weeks we will be introducing the members of this team, sharing their stories and following their progress to race day. Team Jarrold are raising money through sponsorship for the Jarrold 250 Charity Initiative supporting The Big C, The Princes Trust and the EACH Nook Appeal.
Run Norwich takes place in Sunday 21 July 2019 and is an award-winning 10-kilometre road race, organised by the Norwich City FC Community Sports Foundation (CSF). The run takes place in the heart of Norwich’s beautiful and historic city centre, passing some of the city’s most iconic landmarks including Norwich Castle, The Forum, Norwich Cathedral, and many more.
All 7500 places have sold out.
Here’s Gareth’s story…
The first time runner – Gareth
New to the world of running, our E-commerce expert Gareth will be taking on his first ever competitive race when he embarks on the challenge of the Run Norwich 10K. We found out how Gareth will be approaching this challenge…
Why are you taking part in the race?
I was looking for my 2019 charity challenge after embarking on various fundraising activities over the years from Movember to Sweatember, with the aim of raising money for local cancer charities. Therefore the opportunity to push myself personally by running 10k, whilst also raising money for the Big C seemed the perfect challenge for me!
What is your running experience?
As a relatively new runner, I am currently achieving a weekly run with the help of my Couch to 5K app, and the support of Jo Whiley as my online coach.
I initially struggled to find the motivation to get out and run, particularly on winter nights, but found having a great soundtrack to run to has helped push me up to almost 4K. Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, Glen Campbell’s Southern Nights and Blue Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling are among my favourite running songs to give me a needed boost of energy when I start to flag.
What is your training plan?
As the evenings become lighter, I aim to increase to 3 runs per week to help improve my stamina. I will also be participating in park runs and joining the Jarrold Run Club, to give me the knowledge and support of a running group, whilst also becoming familiar with the Run Norwich route.
Is there anything else you are doing to prepare?
As I have started to increase my running distance, I realised my old trainers were becoming increasingly uncomfortable! So I decided to use the Jarrold Sport Gait Analysis service to identify the right kind of shoe for me. I found the service, which included the use of a treadmill, foot scanner and expert running knowledge from Hannah instore, incredibly helpful for understanding my own personal running style. I was identified as “over pronating” when running, meaning my feet turn over more to one side when running (something I was unaware of), and found the perfect shoe to offset this and properly support me as I run!
