Ask the stylists: Top 10 tips for shopping the sale

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for sale hunters, but how can you make sure that you buy a real bargain in the winter sale? Our womenswear and menswear personal stylists, and home stylist share their tips on how you can shop smart in the sales.

Shopping the sale for you

A tried and trusted way to ensure you only buy the pieces that you will wear is to shop your wardrobe first. Throw out anything that doesn’t fit you and make a note of any gaps – do you have more tops than bottoms? Are you lacking dresses? Do you have a classic white shirt? Note down all the items you need to make your existing clothes into outfits. These are the pieces you need to look for in the sale.

Classic items are a great buy. A white shirt, a good pair of jeans, a pair of black trousers, a good coat, a blazer, leather boots and a pair of court shoes are key items worth buying in the sale, as these items will go with anything in your wardrobe and will help pull your look together.

Look for classic trends such as floral, monochrome, animal print or tribal as these trends comes around every year so you will get wear out of them.

If you like to have your finger on the fashion pulse, look for items that will be on trend come spring and summer. This year pink, green, the athleisure look, culottes, cold shoulder tops and shirts (which will be the hero piece for 2018) will be fashionable this year so look for these styles on the sale rails.

Come and ask us for advice! We have two womenswear personal stylists and one menswear stylist and all of us can help you shop the sales for items that suit you. Plus the service is free!

Shopping the sale for your home

Before you go shopping take a look at the rooms in your house and think about what you need. Do you need a rug to bring the look of your lounge together? Is your crockery chipped and in need of replacing? Do you need a side table next to a sofa to make a seating area more practical? Make a list and look for these items in the sale.

If you are thinking of decorating this year, make a note of this spring and summer’s colour palette so that you can invest in pieces that will fit with your new scheme. This year it’s all about deep pink, burgundy, teal and terracotta as homes get a more retro feel.

Some of the trends from this year will still be the looks for 2018, such as flamingos, pineapple and palm tree motifs, pot plants (palms and succulents) and tribal. There will be a lot of items that fit with these trends in the sale.

Make the most of the sale on furniture. A good sideboard, dining table, a bed or sofa will last for many years to come so will make a good investment now.

If you want to make a statement in a room, an armchair in a contrasting colour or pattern to your sofa is perfect. Investment pieces such as this are good buys in the sale.
