Food and drink

Jarrold loves...local food and drink

From your summer picnic to spoiling yourself with a little treat, shop local and enjoy a delicious summer of food and drink, says Jarrold Deli buyer Judith Finney.

I don’t know what it is, but eating and drinking food that has been produced or supplied locally seems to taste so much better than food and drink that has travelled from far and wide. Maybe it’s because when you buy local you are doing your bit to support local farmers/producers/suppliers, or maybe it’s because Norfolk produce just tastes better. Whatever the reason, you can discover a variety of Norfolk food and drink from the Deli at Jarrold.

Here are just some of my favourites – but do visit us instore to discover many more...

The Norfolk Malt 'N' Rye Single Grain Whisky 50cl

Judith says: "Made at The English Whisky Company's St George's Distillery in Norfolk, this is just one of the local whiskies we have instore and online. This is a rare and wonderful whisky, which is produced in small batches using a mix of malting barley and rye. The result is a beautifully rich and slightly dry tipple, with hints of sweet toffee, golden syrup and demerara sugar, apples, vanilla, milk chocolate, orange and a light herbal note of lemon thyme."

Norfolk Gin 70cl

Judith says: "There are many local gins available in both the Deli and the Wine Bar, and each has a different taste so you are sure to find your favourite. One of mine (and I like them all!) is Norfolk Gin as it has a very distinct floral taste that is perfect for summer. Handcrafted and bottled in Norwich, this artisan gin comes in a stylish stone jar, which you can reuse as a vase once the gin has run out!"

Black Shuck Raspberry Liqueur 35cl

Judith says: "Who doesn't know the Norfolk story of Black Shuck? Black Shuck is the name given to a ghostly black dog that has roamed the Norfolk and Suffolk countryside for hundreds of years. According to folklore the demon black dog with huge flaming eyes haunts the lanes and footpaths particularly along the coastline. Some tales record Black Shuck as a protector or guide, other more sinister stories tell of a bad omen. However, you will be pleased to learn there is an antidote to the bad omen. A glass of any Black Shuck liqueur from the Norfolk Sloe Company will fill you with enough good spirit to counteract any bad spirits!"

Crush Smoked Chilli Oil 500ml

Judith says: "Made using Norfolk grown rapeseed, and cold pressed and bottled in Norfolk, Crush oils are perfect for roasting, baking and frying - and is ideal for salad dressings. The smoked chilli is just one of many flavours."

Candi's Hot Pow Pow Marmalade

Judith says: "If you enjoy strong cheese such as extra mature cheddar, this is the perfect accompaniment. A full flavoured take on a traditional onion marmalade, Candis Hot Pow Wow adds a touch of heat.  Rich with the flavours of local, sweet East Anglian onions along with the heat of red chilli flakes and black mustard seed this chutney is also perfect  with hot or cold meats and game."

Stokes Tomato Ketchup 315g

Judith says: "Who knew that the taste of Italy was produced just over the border near Woodbridge in Suffolk? Made with deliciously juicy Italian tomatoes (200g of them are packed into every 100g of Stokes Tomato Ketchup), this is a pantry essential. Perfect with fish and chips, bangers and mash, and the great British breakfast, this sauce can also be added to other dishes such as spaghetti bolognese and soups."

Little Red Roaster Red Bomb Coffee Beans 250g

Judith says: "Our friends over at Little Red Roaster coffee in Norwich are passionate about coffee, and this roast is one for the coffee connoisseurs. The Little Red Roaster House blend of Brazilian Vargem Grand Estate, Columbian La Pata and Panama Finca Las Esperanza coffee beans is a great introduction to the other coffees available from this local brand."

Gnaw Chocolate Bars (available in a variety of flavours) 100g

£3 each

Judith says: "For those who remember the days when Norwich city centre smelt of chocolate from the Rowntrees/Nestle chocolate factory, it's good to know that our fine city is still producing this confectionery - and some would argue with a much better quality. Gnaw is one of our more popular chocolate bars, with a plethora of different flavours, including sugar free. The Norwich maker is also makes Brooke & Amble chocolate, which we also stock in the Deli."

Orchard Fruits Luscious Lemon Ginger Curd - Gluten Free

Judith says: "Sometimes there is nothing quite like lemon curd on toast, and this zesty one has the delighful spicy surprise of ginger. Perfect on toast, in desserts such as lemon meringue pie and adding as a sauce to your breakfast fruits."

Grain Brewery Best Bitter

Judith says: "It's won a CAMRA award for the best beer and bitter, and if you enjoy your beer with a malty, chocolately taste this is a winner. Brewed in the Waveney Valley of South Norfolk, Grain offers other varieties of beer."

Norfolk Brewhouse StubbleStag Premium Norfolk Lager

Judith says: "For those who like to drink local beer, but find them a bit too real aley, this award-winning lager could be for you. Brewed in Norfolk, this lager has the hoppy bitterness of a craft beer, but is refreshing like a lager."

Norfolk Brewhouse MoonGazer Golden Ale

Judith says: "A fabulous beer for summer, this golden ale brewed in Norfolk, has a citrus aroma and a crisp, dry finish. Brewed using the finest Maris Otter barley, wheat and four varieties of hops, this is perfect for summer days in the garden.
