Guest Post: Bullards


Norwich based Bullards is bringing The Spirit of Norwich to Christmas this year with a new gin and a revamp of their gin bottles. We caught up with Russell Evans and Craig Allison at Bullards Spirits to find out more.

Your new bottles for Bullard’s collection of gins looks very stylish – why the change?

We believe our stylish, new bottles and branding really set us apart from other gin brands as we’re paying homage to our fine city and Bullards’ 180-year-old heritage. We will always distill gin in Norwich and it’s important we tell our story. We know that we’re operating in a fast-moving industry and we need to not only keep pace, but set the standard for presentation as much as flavour.  

Are the bottle designs inspired by anything in particular?

We’ve taken inspiration from a number of aspects of our heritage, like the shape and colours of old Bullards beer bottles, lovingly re-engineered as premium, contemporary gin bottles. The sleek bottle neck is inspired by the iconic chimney stack that use to tower over Bullards’ Anchor Brewery in Norwich. And of course, the familiar ‘tipsy anchor’ trademark features prominently, embossed within the glass and highlighted with copper accents on the paper-free labelling. 

And you have a new tagline ‘The Spirit of Norwich’ how did this come about?

We’re really proud to be based in the same city that has been home to Bullards for over 180 years. First established as a brewery in 1837, we re-launched this Norwich institution in 2015, becoming the first company to distill and bottle gin in our city in 150 years.  We want to share that spirit with people across the world. So what better way that to trademark the words ‘The Spirit Of Norwich’ and using the hashtag #TheSpiritOfNorwich? 

And…you are also launching Old Tom Gin – you have been busy! Can you tell us a bit more about this new gin?

Old Tom gin actually dates back to the 18th century - the first documented recipe was recorded in 1701! Our distillers were keen to pursue development of an Old Tom as a classic that would still work for modern palates, and one that allowed our distillers greater freedom to experiment with sweeteners like mango and demerara sugar, so they could really push their own boundaries to produce a new expression that would complement our existing products.  

Our contemporary interpretation is the perfect spirit to make your own festive cocktail, with delicious cinnamon flavours and a hint of Norfolk honey. It’s the third product in our range and we are confident it will follow in the footsteps of our other expressions to win over gin-lovers and achieve industry accolades.

Now that you have a strong collection of gins what’s your favourite way to serve each of them? 

Old Tom Gin ABV 42.5%  

Rich mouthfeel thanks to the honey, with pink pepper adding a spicy complexity and plenty of smooth mango softness at its core.   

We recommend: Mixing with standard Indian Tonic Water or Elderflower Tonic, garnished with grapefruit peel, lemon peel or honeycomb and vanilla.  

Strawberry and Black Pepper Gin ABV 40%  
This is very fruity with sweet strawberries on the nose with a faint tickle of black pepper. Mixed with tonic or ice, the strawberry comes alive and scales up the fruit flavours. 
We recommend: Mix with standard Indian tonic water or elderflower tonic to make it slightly sweeter. Garnish with fresh strawberries and mint.  

London Dry Gin ABV 42.5% ABV   
This is our take on a traditional London Dry, softened and smoothed out with the light sweet spice of the Tonka bean.   

We recommend: Mix with standard Indian tonic water or aromatic tonic garnished with plenty of ice and dried or dehydrated orange slices.   

It’s exciting that the new-look Bullards gin is exclusively launching in Chapters at Jarrold on our Christmas Customer Evening – what can we expect from the evening?  

We are extremely excited to be unveiling our newest flavour, Old Tom Gin, for the very first time as well as launching our stylish new branding and bottles.  We’ll be giving tips on the best way to serve this spirit this Christmas season and customers will be able to taste all three products. We can’t wait to see people’s reaction and we welcome everyone to join in with the spirt on Twitter and Instagram by using the hashtag #TheSpiritOfNorwich. The new Bullards gins will be available to try in Chapters on the Jarrold Customer Evening, Tuesday 13 November from 6pm until 9.30pm.
