Ask the stylists: Transitional dressing
With the new autumn collections coming into store it's tempting to buy items for your new season wardrobe right now - and why not? says Jarrold stylists Florrie Dunn and Kate Reeve.
Despite fashion becoming more transitional between seasons than ever before, as many of us no longer have distinct summer and winter wardrobes, there is something exciting about discovering the new fashion collections, especially for autumn.
Perhaps it’s down to the great British weather – unpredictable, prone to being a little chilly at times, and even on the hottest of days it can rain. The autumn wardrobe offers a timeless capsule of clothing that can be worn all year round. Layer over summer attire now, and wear with winter attire once the seasons change.
At this time of year the first signs of the new autumn collections start to arrive instore (and online). The majority of these pieces are items that will ease you into the new season in style – and it is these items of clothing will become your hero pieces for years to come.
Take the leather biker jacket, for example. Wear it now over your summer frock on those chiller summer evenings, then for autumn and winter over your jumper dress or jeans and jumper.
Michael Kors Ivy Leather Jacket
This autumn it’s all about green and a simple dress is something that you can wear now with sheer tights or bare legs and sandals, then for autumn and winter with thick tights and knee high boots.
Michael Kors Cole Smock Dress
Knitwear is a great early autumn buy. Perfect for taking with you on holiday for those cooler evenings now, and later for layering under a coat. Choose a jumper in next season’s green or mustard hues – or better still both!
Luisa Cerano Two Tone Texture Sweater
You may not be able to wear it now (let’s hope summer lasts for a bit longer), but investing in your winter coat now is a good idea if you want to find something that not many people will have. The early autumn fashion drops tend to be smaller than when we get into the main season.
Luisa Cerano Wool Mix Coat
Look for classic trends – such as floral motifs – as these are the pieces that will stand the test of time. Applique and 3D florals are a fashion trend now and come autumn the winter floral look will once again be on-trend.
Michael Kors Flower Cropped Bomber Style Jacket
