Ask the Book Buyer: The most exciting autumn releases...with an offer you can't refuse

This autumn sees the publication of some eagerly awaited new books by established authors. Jarrold book buyer Chris Rushby wants to make you an offer you can't refuse...

Dear Reader,

After several emails of suggested summer reading it feels (without wanting to wish our lives away) like the right time to turn a page and start looking forward to the autumn, when of course many of the most exciting and best-selling books of the year are destined to be published.

For several years the book industry has been picking one particular autumn publication date when numerous high-profile books are due to be released and christening it 'super Thursday', the date in question this year being 4th October. It is, of course, little more than a blatant marketing ploy designed to get you, the book buying public, off your chaise longues and down to the shops en masse on the chosen date, because you just can't wait to acquire one or several of the estimated 544 new hardbacks published on the day. This year you can choose between Jacqueline Wilson and Shane Warne, Michelle Obama and Kevin Keegan, David Walliams and David Attenborough – the list goes on. And on.

Here in the Jarrold book department we like to (as I think we say round here) dew different, on which basis I'd like to recommend three great new titles due to be published this summer and autumn, though NOT on Super Thursday (though I hope you'll agree they're all three, in their way, quite super) and where you can pre-order the books now from Jarrold at just half the recommended retail price.

Happy reading,

Chris

Jamie Cooks Italy

Jamie Cooks Italy
Jamie Oliver

RRP £26
Pre-order price £13

Published 9th August

The fresh-faced kid from the River Café, the cheeky-cheery Naked Chef, the campaigner against junk food and its marketing, Jamie Oliver is and has been many things in his glittering career, but here’s Jamie returning to Italy, a part of the world with which he clearly has an affinity, with the latest in a long line of accessible, inspiring cookbooks (and the accompanying TV series, of course). Other cookery titles may end up winning the food writing awards, but this is almost certain to be one of the handful of top selling titles this year.

Lethal White

Lethal White
Robert Galbraith

RRP £20
Pre-order price £10

Published 18th September

Galbraith (AKA JK Rowling, of course) has written three highly successful novels featuring private detective Cormoran Strike, all now turned into successful TV mini-series, with the lugubrious Tom Burke outstanding in the central role of Strike. This fourth book in the series is billed by the publisher not just as a gripping mystery, as the “page-turning next instalment in the ongoing story of Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott” – Robin being Strike’s former assistant, now partner and, who knows, perhaps more…

Tombland

Tombland
CJ Sansom

RRP £20
Pre-order price £10

Published 18th October

PRE-ORDER BONUS

Pre-order the new book and you will also receive, on publication, a free copy of Dissolution, the first title in the Shardlake series.

CJ Sansom's historical crime series set in Tudor times and featuring the inimitable Matthew Shardlake is back. That alone will be exciting enough for a host of readers who've waited several years for this moment. Even more exciting, though, is the news that the seventh episode is (brace yourself) set here in Norwich itself - hence the 'Tombland' title - around the events of Kett's Rebellion. The book will be a national best-seller, of course, but here in Norfolk the sales are likely to be stratospheric and it’s a fair bet this will be the top seller in Jarrolds this autumn.
