The limited edition of the new Murakami: would you pay £750 for this book?
About 180,000 new books are published in the UK every year. In total, there are probably eight million titles available - if you add to the million or more in print in conventional form all those available 'print on demand' - and obviously we can only stock a very small proportion of those titles in Jarrolds. We end up holding around 30,000 of the many millions of books we could, in theory, choose from.
So why did we buy this £750(!) book, a limited edition version of Murakami's new novel, to add to the other 29,999 books in the range?
First, it's by Haruki Murakami, one of the finest novelists of our time. Second, it's actually - in spite of some slightly mixed reviews - a very fine piece of fiction. Third, it's a beautiful and unique object: only a handful have been produced and it's set to be a highly desirable collector's item. Fourth... no, can't think of a fourth reason. You'll either be pleased with our choice, or nonplussed. If you want to know more please call us, or email, or ask to be shown this beautiful book when you next visit Jarrolds.
While we're talking about Murakami, let me also recommend his fascinating (and, if you only know the novels, highly untypical) book about his experiences with long distance running. Apart from being a brilliant writer it turns out he's a bit of an iron man too. Running marathons and much longer races, Murakami provides a fascinating insight into the running (and occasionally the writing) life. And, at £8.99, it's a bit more affordable than the limited edition version of the new novel.
