travel guides for 2020

Dear reader,

According to data from airlines and travel agents, January and February are the busiest months of the year for holiday sales. Perhaps because the very same companies tempt us with cut-price offers at this time, or maybe we’re all just dreaming of escape from dark winter days. Either way, we definitely meet more of you browsing our travel guides and maps at this time of year, as trips and excursions are plotted.

In this context, I decided to shed some light on the myriad different travel guides available. They’re all so full of brilliant information, routes and images making it hard to choose: it depends on where you’re going, how long your trip is and how much you want to leave to chance when you get there.

At the moment we’re running a BUY ONE GET ONE HALF PRICE promotion across all Insight Guides and maps, Rough Guides and Berlitz pocket guides, until the end of February. I’ve included some of these in a round up below, amongst others, but do pop in for the full range on offer, and of course, to share your holiday plans!

With Valentine’s day coming up, plenty of couples will be snatching a weekend away in the city of love. Ideal for taking on a short trip, this little pocket guide opens with a brief history of Paris, followed by a short round-up of what to do and see in the key areas. ‘A perfect day in Paris’ is a suggested day-long itinerary and the book’s cover opens up into a small street map, including highlighted portions for the city centre and Montmartre. It also has a menu reader, a little dictionary and an A-Z of travel tips at the back. Et, voila!

DK Eyewitness: South Africa

DK Eyewitness: South Africa

£17.99

For anyone chasing winter sun: the gorgeous photography in this guide perfectly showcases South Africa’s landscapes, wildlife and culture. DK revamped their Eyewitness series a year ago now and it has paid off; the covers are aspirational and the inside layouts attractive, often with bitesize text in favour of dominant images and detailed, labelled illustrations. They have also listened to customer feedback and made the guides lighter to carry, which is good because this is the kind of beautiful book you’ll want to bring home again after your trip and display on your bookshelves!

Colourful and accessible, this brand new guide helps the reader decide what trip is best for their family, takes them through destinations and different forms of travel, tips for travelling with different aged children (babies through to teenagers) and onto a section for ‘inspiration’: a series of Top 10s, from family-friendly cruises to budget destinations. There is great photography throughout that will no doubt jump out at younger family members and for grown-ups there is a Q&A section at the end with a variety of parents who regularly travel the globe with their children.

The Rough Guide to The Lake District

The Rough Guide to The Lake District

£13.99

BUY ONE GET ONE HALF PRICE

Rough Guides focus far less on images than some do and tend to be more text heavy, which I personally find reassuring and hugely helpful when looking for places to stay and visit. This seventh edition to the Lake District is packed with paragraphs about the area’s history, and all manner of detail about the landscape, weather (essential for UK holidays!), festivals, shopping, sports and walks, plus accommodation and eating to suit all budgets. There are highlight boxes with stories of interest plus inset maps focussing on small areas of interest. Recommended.

Insight Guides Travel Map: Southern Spain

Insight Guides Travel Map: Southern Spain

£6.99

BUY ONE GET ONE HALF PRICE

Covering the area just south of Madrid, right down to the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, the Azores and Madeira, this large sheet map not only marks out major road networks but places of interest, area highlights and detailed topography along the way. It also encompasses the area of Portugal directly west of Spain, including a city plans of Lisbon alongside Seville and Valencia. The map’s legend is printed in eight languages and as with the Insight guides, the map works in conjunction with the Walking Eye App for additional content. Having studied this map for review, I’m now seriously tempted to book myself a Southern Spanish sojourn!
