Books that make extra special Christmas gifts
With the city’s lights now sparkling, there’s no denying that the festive season has arrived and it was amazing to see so many of you at our Christmas customer evening, getting ahead with your shopping. Giving gifts is a big part of Christmas and though the process can be fraught with tricky decisions (unless you opt for socks!), it can also be the best bit – delighting someone with a special present.
I’m biased, but I think books make the best gifts, truly offering something for everyone. In our Jarrold Gift Guide we’ve put together several pages of bookish inspiration for adults and children but I have a few more suggestions to share here; some remarkable books and experiences that would all make outstanding, unique, literary gifts.
We are making these available online for Christmas but if you’d like to take a look, we’ll be happy to show you everything here in the department – just ask a member of the team to help.
The very definition of luxury publishing, we are lucky enough to have two remaining copies of this rare and stunning publication, celebrating the career of one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century. Created in collaboration with the Lucian Freud Archive, this is a two-volume edition in a beautiful slipcase, clothbound and embossed, including more than 480 paintings, drawings and sketches, etchings and illustrated private letters. If this wasn’t enough, the works include Freud’s final unprinted etching plate, and his rarest etching, of which only one exists, published here for the first time. This is a once in a lifetime gift that would take pride of place on the bookshelves of any art lovers.
Ticket for cream tea with crime writer Sophie Hannah
For book lovers, there is nothing better than the chance to hear a favourite author talking about their trade secrets – how they dream up their characters and plots and tackle the writing process. We’re pleased to be welcoming bestselling crime writer Sophie Hannah to Jarrold in January to do exactly this, as she introduces her suspenseful new thriller, Haven’t They Grown. Tickets for this afternoon event not only include a copy of Sophie’s new book but also a scrumptious cream tea in Benjis restaurant (1st floor), where the event takes place; a brilliant bookish experience for both foodies and crime fiction lovers!

Letters from Father Christmas: Deluxe Edition
A Christmas classic and a gorgeous gift for adults or children, these are the collected letters and pictures received by J.R.R Tolkien’s children from ‘Father Christmas’ between 1920 and 1943. This is a limited edition printing in a custom-made slipcase, its front cover illustrated with Tolkien’s own pictures of Father Christmas and Polar Bear. The text inside has been reset for this edition with a revised and expanded introduction and completely charming reproductions of the letters, envelopes and drawings from ‘Father Christmas’, in colour for the first time.
The Hobbit Deluxe Edition
The classic tale of Bilbo Baggins’ epic journey was first published in 1937 and is produced here in a luxury edition making it the perfect gift for Hobbit fans. A definitive, reset version of the text with full corrections, this edition includes a 16-page introduction from Christopher Tolkien about The Hobbit’s history. It contains the full illustrations and comes in a beautiful slipcase (festive green, red and gold colouring) and also includes a brilliant fold-out version of Thror’s Map, with ‘magic’ runes only visible when the map is held up to the light.
National Geographic Atlas of the World 11th Edition
This newly published edition of the National Geographic’s flagship atlas is a thing to behold – closed and inside its slipcase it measures in at 483 x 322mm, best displayed and browsed on a desktop or plinth. Its 250 maps and visuals span land, both poles and every ocean, as well as outer space, including the moon and Mars. The graphics are remarkable, exploring global trends, covering flags, facts and place-names on top of the mapping and I defy anyone not to be awe-struck by this perspective on the world.
The Globe Company
Globes are hard to choose; there are educational globes, children’s globes, desktop, light-up and fully rotational ones too. We stock a range of beautiful, stylish globes of varying sizes, both in traditional and antique-style colouring but for me the pièce de résistance of desktop globes is the Lavenham. It has a 30cm diameter antique globe ball and this is offset by a burr walnut base, which was designed and made in partnership with a Suffolk-based company in, you guessed it, Lavenham. The wood is rare and each piece is different making this a fittingly unique gift.
