Reading to help improve your health and wellbeing
In the last fortnight we have celebrated announcements of the shortlists for two very special writing competitions. First, the East Anglian Book Awards 2020, a partnership between Jarrold, the EDP, the National Centre for Writing and the UEA. These are annual awards that recognise and showcase the strength of publishing and writing across the East of England. Second, Jarrold Stories, our very own short story competition celebrating our 250th birthday this year. We were thrilled to receive over 200 entries this summer and it was a tough job selecting our favourites. Winners will be announced on BBC Radio Norfolk on 3rd November. Congratulations to all the writers on these shortlists!
We know that a regular writing practice is, for some, a great way of taking care of mental health and wellbeing, something that is more important than ever this winter. In honour of this, and by way of recognising World Mental Health dayon the 10th October, we have invited an expert special guest to choose the books for this edit.
Jane Hannah is the founder of Norwich-based business Healthier Happier You, which aims to make a difference to your health and happiness through motivation, mindset and movement; these are her recommended reads for learning more about and taking care of your wellbeing.
Everything is Figureoutable
Not only a wonderful book but the concept is a marvel to live by every day. Because no matter what you are facing, you do have what it takes to figure it out and not only get through it but to really sparkle on the other side. Remember you have proved this during the spring and summer of 2020 you figured it out and here you are. The book is an easy and enjoyable read with lots of great tasks that you can complete to help you figure out your direction and potential. In fact, this book was instrumental in giving me the confidence to set up my business Healthier Happier You.
A brilliant book which explains the concept of starting tiny to get the big results that you want. We all have room to make improvements in our lives to look after our health and wellbeing and become happier and the introduction of 'Tiny Habits' is the best start to this journey in emerging your new self.
Often the thought of change is daunting and the reasons not to seem bigger than the reasons to change. Starting tiny and fitting the changes in to your day in an easy and enjoyable way is an amazing way to implement positive change. We are humans after all and when we do something and feel a sense of achievement, we will of course want to do it again and be better!
A memoir by a US author and wake-up call to live life to the full, this recent bestseller is one I find myself talking about and quoting often. So many amazing gems to be found in these carefully crafted pages, it is a book that will help you unearth the real you and not the version that you think you should be. Untamed has given me a new confidence to seek answers internally rather than going to the external committee of friends and family to find them. Everyone who I have chatted about this book with to has found their own truths in it, part of what makes it so special.
The Chimp Paradox
Dr Steve Peters
A bit of a classic, this is a fascinating discovery of the inner self and why we have the reactions we do in situations which then shape our emotions. I have had a copy of this book for years but it was only during lockdown that I took the time to read it and wow, do I wish I had read it sooner. It really is life changing. Ever wondered why you reacted to something the way you did, why you ate the piece of cake you had sworn not to or why you feel unmotivated? Understanding your inner 'chimp' and discovering the tools to 'manage' it will without doubt make your life a healthier and happier one. I am often overheard having a chat with my chimp these days and the closer I have got to the chimp the more balanced I feel across my life.
Why We Sleep
I love this! When was the last time you jumped out of bed before the alarm went off full of energy and didn't start the day craving that first caffeine hit? For me this happens every morning because I am obsessed with sleep and always give myself the opportunity to clock up nine hours. Ok, so I know not everyone is the same but this book will give you an amazing understanding and appreciation of why sleep is your rock and how you can improve your chances of getting a good solid sleep each night.
Feel Better in 5
Dr Rangan Chatterjee
JARROLD PRICE £14.99
This is an absolute pleasure to read just like all of Chatterjee’s podcasts are to listen to. Everything in this book makes sense to me and similarly to the philosophy of Tiny Habits, it enlightens you with easy ways to incorporate healthy habits across all areas of your life in just five minutes a day. Like my obsession with sleep I am a bit obsessed with the Doc and I love his work; he comes across as so down to earth with such compassion and empathy for people, explaining and proving that every one of us can change and make improvements to our health and happiness.
