Activity books for children this Easter!
Things are springing into life around us as the days get longer and brighter and we can spend more time outdoors with friends and family again. Lots of you will be looking forward to the Easter holidays, though perhaps already wondering how to keep children entertained when once again, they’ll be at home…
I’ve put together a list of our top activity books to help keep younger children busy, with plenty of ideas, crafts and tasks to make and do outside, whether in the woods, garden or park. Plus I’ve included some irresistible, interactive, Easter-themed books for little ones to enjoy, and for when rainy days strike!
Happy reading and Happy Easter,
Gruffalo and Friends Outdoor Activity Book
Little Wild Things
Based on some of the much-loved characters created by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, inside this activity book are characters from The Gruffalo, Monkey Puzzle, Room on the Broom and Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book. Divided into sections including activities for a walk, a party, for a rainy day or for letting off steam, I noticed the cover is also wipe clean so you can bring the book outdoors with you! Lovely imaginative ideas such as digging for pirate treasure, making a butterfly feeder or going on a Gruffalo hunt, all with step-by-step instructions.
Rhyming Rabbit Sticker Book
February marked the 10-year-anniversary of the original publication of Rhyming Rabbit, another Julia Donaldson favourite, this time illustrated by Lydia Monks (the pair also work together on the much-loved What the Ladybird Heard series). This sticker book is new and designed as a little gift for Easter, birthday or simply for a rainy day. It includes over 400 stickers and also has scenes to stick them into plus word puzzles and games. I was sticker mad as a kid and would have loved this one!
My Magical Easter Bunny
Illustrated by Yujin Shin
An interactive, brightly coloured board book with a sparkly cover and push, pull and turn mechanisms throughout, so perfect for 0-3 years olds. The text follows a bouncy Easter bunny on an egg hunt and this one is great for reading together, out loud, as it rhymes and each scene has things to spot and point at. A lovely little Easter gift.
Five Little Easter Bunnies
I couldn't resist including another bunny-themed book, particularly as I love the illustrations here from Laura Hughes, in the same series as We’re Going on an Egg Hunt (and this is the same duo who brought us We’re Going on an Elf Chase at Christmas). This is another very sweet Easter adventure with five little bunnies going off to find five little eggs. It’s a lift-the-flap book so again interactive and ideal for 0-3 year olds. It has the full spectrum of Easter characters, from the bunnies to lambs, chick and ducklings so couldn’t feel more Spring-like.
KEW: Grow, Forage and Make
A gorgeous new book for budding gardeners, full of fun things to do with plants. Alys Fowler, well-known for her appearances on Gardener’s World, is the perfect author to inspire a lifelong love of plants in children. The book includes over 30 projects, foraging and craft activities and experiments for both outdoors and indoors, including growing air plants, growing an avocado tree, making wildflower seed paper and foraging for edible flowers and roots. Projects are designed for everyone, so no specialist equipment needed!
The Nature Adventure Book
Does exactly as the title suggests! Aimed at 5-7 year olds, there are over 40 activities, handily (for adults) split into four sections: adventure skills, nature detective, wild art, and sensory games. Like The Gruffalo and Friends Outdoor Activity Book the activities are designed for the park, garden or just out in the local neighbourhood – it’s completely accessible whether you live near a green space or not. Projects include collecting leaves on a nature walk, building a twig raft, making nature-inspired art and leading a friend on a journey to meet a tree. Hours of entertainment.
