Ask the Personal Beauty Consultant: How to create the perfect pout

Read my lips, it’s all about creating that perfect pout when it comes to applying your lipstick, so here are my top tips on how to get it right, says Jarrold Personal Beauty Consultant Paris Cressy.

Applying lipstick is simple right? But how long does your lipstick last? Should you go for a matte or gloss? And do you really need to use a lipliner? Here’s my guide on how you can make your lips really do the talking.

Lip care

A lip scrub applied to the lips is a great way to get rid of any dry skin and ensure you have a smooth base and finish to your lipstick.

Paris recommends: MAC Lip Scrubtious, £13.  Sweet Vanilla is amazing!

If you suffer from dry lips, always apply a lip balm before any lipstick to hydrate and condition your lips.

Paris recommends:  Chanel Rouge Coco Baume, £31

If you don't like the look of a coloured lip liner I would recommend a clear/invisible lip liner. This type of lip liner does exactly the same as a regular liner, but has no colour and so of course can be worn with a multitude of lip colours.

Paris recommends: Laura Mercier Anti-Feathering Lip Liner in Clear, £19

Lip liner

Lip liner is essential to line, define and shape the lips. Lip liner stops any feathering which often can happen around the cupids bow area and the under part of the lip when using lipstick alone.

Always start by filling in the cupids bow and drawing from the outside in, this will stop you dragging the lip and making a mistake.

To add more longevity to your lipstick colour draw all over your lips to create a matte finish, which will prevent any colour sliding from your lip. Of course, if you want a super trendy matte lip then simply use lip liner all over the lips instead of a lipstick.

When choosing the colour of your lip liner try to go for a colour that is complimentary to your natural lip colour. Be wary of choosing a lip liner that is going to be a lot darker than the lip colour you're going for as any lipliner you choose will change the colour of the lipstick.

Paris recommends: Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk Lipliner, £16

Lip gloss

Lipgloss is a great product to use over your lipstick or just worn on its own to add a voluminous, lustre look.

Paris recommends: Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Collagen Active Lip-Gloss, £25

Lipstick textures and finishes

When shopping for a lipstick it can be overwhelming which texture or finish of lipstick is the right one for you. So here are my top picks depending on what look you want:

For a satin finish

Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick in number 434 Promenade

Instore, Beauty Hall, ground floor

For  a cremesheen finish  - MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Peach Blossom

For a matte finish  - Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillowtalk

For a glossy finish - Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in number 54 Boy

When applying your choice of lipstick work from the outside in, following your natural lip line. A brush will always help achieve a flawless defined finish.

Paris recommends: Charlotte Tilbury's Square-Tipped Lip Brush, £18
