Ask the beauty buyer: 5 fragrances for Christmas

Give them the gift of fragrance this Christmas with my pick of five of the more exclusive fragrances from the beauty hall, says Jarrold beauty buyer Deborah Pritchard.

When it comes to finding that perfect Christmas gift, a fragrance can create memories that last a lifetime.

Fragrances have the power to evoke memories and can even inspire you to be the person you want to be. Take the recent launch of Chanel Gabrielle, the perfume takes inspiration from Coco Chanel’s roots when she was called Gabrielle, a rebel at heart, passionate and free, who fought to become the woman she wanted to be. The casting of actress Kirsten Stewart in its advertising campaign, creates the muse for the fragrance, a signature scent for those who want to stand out from the crowd.

While the stories behind the scent can tempt you to buy into a certain fragrance, there is nothing more powerful than developing your own. My favourite fragrance when the weather turns colder is Tom Ford Black Orchid. It takes me back to when this fragrance was launched and at the time it was so powerful, a real statement scent, it kept selling out. Today it is surrounded by other dramatic scents, but for me it still feels luxurious and glamorous.

So what’s their favourite scent? If they haven’t found it yet, or want a fragrance that is just that little bit different to the mainstream trends, here are just some of the niche fragrances we have instore and online that will make great Christmas gifts. You never know, one of them could become their new signature scent.

Creed Viking

£185 for 50ml

For the man who likes to go against the grain, this new fragrance from Creed is inspired by the crafted longships of the Viking Age. A symbol of voyage and undeniable perseverance, longships were carefully designed for the skilled seaman who embodied unbridled determination to conquer. With a woody, citrus fragrance with notes of peppercorn, Indian sandalwood and Haitian vetiver, this fiery fragrance is for those who are fearless in spirit.

Penhaligons The Coveted Duchess Rose Eau De Parfum

£178 for 75ml

For those who like a quirky take on history, Penhaligon's presents to you the unofficial side of Lord George’s dynasty, a collection of fragrances inspired by members of his family. This fragrance is based upon Duchess Rose, the daughter of Lady Blanche and Lord George. Rose married a Duke to escape the stifling rigidity of her family and to become the Coveted Duchess Rose. At first, naively romantic, she has now become disillusioned and frustrated in an unsatisfactory marriage. Always looking for fun and frivolity (and perhaps love affairs), her fragrance is a not so innocent fresh rose.

Annick Goutal Nuit et Confidences EDP

£85 for 50ml

This refined and feminine fragrance is inspired by Annick Goutal’s involvement with artists and intellectuals. The scent will plunge you into the heart of an elite evening in Paris with its bergamot, pepper, frankincense, tonka bean, vanilla and white musk notes. Even the bottle, with its indigo pom pom is artistically inspired, representing a reflection of the Milky Way, the eccentricity the artists encountered that Parisian night.
