100 Norfolk Churches of Village & Countryside: A Further Selection (Hardback)

Following the success of his previous book, 100 Norfolk Churches of Village and Countryside, Andrew Swift has again ventured into the depths of the lovely Norfolk countryside to assemble and present another selection of 100 of the county's lesser-known rural churches. These beautiful and atmospheric buildings are enhanced by mellow scenery, enjoy charming settings in picturesque villages or stand alone in evocative seclusion. Many have special historic connections, such as Weston Longville with its famous incumbent and diarist Parson James Woodforde. Also in these pages can be found Swardeston St Mary the Virgin, forever associated with vicar's daughter and 1st World War heroine Nurse Edith Cavell. Father Richard Enraght, the last Anglican cleric imprisoned for introducing 'catholic ritual' into his services, ministered at Bintree St Swithin at the end of the 19th Century. Edmund Nelson, Horatio's father, was rector at Burnham Sutton cum Ulph All Saints and Hilborough All Saints in the 18th Century. All these churches are here, and the others have their stories to tell too. Tivetshall St Margaret has a famous Elizabeth Ist royal arms and Wickhampton St Andrew's wall paintings are renowned. Mileham, Old Buckenham, Thurton and other churches possess wonderful medieval and pre-19th Century glass, while there is superb Victorian glass in many other churches, designed by the cream of 19th Century craftsmen. Grand architecture, fine woodwork, inspired stonework, brasses, ancient fonts and much more can also be discovered and admired in these ecclesiastical treasure houses in the noble county of Norfolk.
