Albert Hicks
City College Norwich Outdoor Adventure student Albert Hicks has triumphed in the Kayak Marathon World Cup 1 Junior championship in Rome.
The 17 year old student from Attleborough, who is a member of Norwich Canoe Club, powered his way to success in the Kayak World Cup which was held in Rome on Saturday 25th June.
The gruelling marathon event was held over a 12-mile course. In the event competitors have to portage every lap, which means getting out of the water and carrying their kayaks between bodies of water, covering more than 700m in this way during the course of the 5-lap race.
Albert was up against two fellow British athletes and three paddlers from Italy and two Argentineans in the final. Despite not expecting to finish amongst the medals, Albert found himself in a leading group of four paddlers as the race entered its final lap.
Albert struck out for home early, some 1500m from the finish, and held off the chasing pack to secure first place - his first major success in international competition.
