Boswells Norwich

Patrick Boswell

Norwich is the star in this book of painting, architecture and history. It is the outcome of Patrick Boswell's recent year of painting in the streets and presents 80 oils in large size. Added to these are sketches, details and his 'painting diary', which brings a stream of memories to each location.
The views move from the cathedral and castle to buildings of each era, with houses, shops, pubs, alleyways, five bridges and a park. A very special place in England, we see Norwich anew and as of old, a city of painters and a place worth painting.
Patrick Boswell has a pleasing technique which is loose and free, getting to the essence of a place by being there without a camera. Better known for his Norfolk coastal scenes bursting with light and colour, he was an art dealer before turning to painting. He is a freeman of Norwich and comes from a long line of Boswells who saw and knew old crome, JS Cotman and the rest of the Norwich School of artists, framing and selling there work from galleries in London Street.
Tombland Alley, The Guildhall, Pull's Ferry, Bishop's Bridge, The Bell Hotel and Strangers Hall looking at all his pictures, one gets an idea of the Artists overall style and realises what Patrick Boswell has achieved. His work is a useful reference to civic heritage and an aid to everyone's vision of this beautiful city. Turn the pages and follow his journey; the more you know Norwich, the more you will appreciate it.
